Knowing versus Doing

We use an online exercise from the INSEAD school at LFGSM that gives people the opportunity to demonstrate the knowing-doing gap. Knowing what you want to do is one thing; getting over the hump and actually doing it is another. How often is that true in life?

We all have good intentions – read this book, take this course, get together with someone. And yet life, inertia, or the knowing-doing gap keep us from actually doing these things.

What’s in your way? What have you said to yourself or anyone “I want to do this” or “If I had time, I would do that.” NOW is the time. Get started. It doesn’t have to be in a big “change your life” way, just small things. Talk about it. Read about it. Make plans. But here’s the catch: be sure that you DO it, or do something that gets you closer to what you want. Someday is now, someday is here, and the more you can move the dial, the more you can move that tape and get on with another one.

Life is too short – however much time we have, it is limited. Scary thought, but true. So go for it, you have (almost) nothing to lose and a lot to gain. For one thing, you can check it off the list! It can open up new avenues for you.

Some of mine: play music overseas. Done several years ago in both Paris and Italy (fabulous!). Bring my own band overseas. Done last year and this year in Germany thanks to my friend Hans at Villa Martha in Ratzeburg. Write more – done. Write a book – to be done, but I’ve contributed a chapter and have several ideas and requests.

See what I mean? Some of these desires I had to be in the right place at the right time, in my case playing with the Mt. Prospect Community Band. But they happened. Find your dreams, wishes, ideas, thoughts and go from just knowing what they are to doing something about them. And share with us and others what you did and how it felt!
